Kaliakoir, Gazipur — After Friday prayers on Friday (October 17), a protest procession came out from the Model Mosque and Mouchak area of Kaliakoir, where locals strongly condemned the rape of a madrasa student. Local religious devotees, youth, students and people from various professions participated in the procession.
The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the accused Joy and Loknath and exemplary punishment for those involved.
A protester who participated in the protest said, “Such heinous crimes are taking away the right to move around without fear in society. If the culprits are not given justice and severe punishment, we will launch a larger movement.” The speakers alleged that a larger program will be announced as a form of resistance if those involved in the incident are not brought to justice quickly.
Efforts and demands mentioned in the protest
The protesters alleged that Asha Moni (13), a 13-year-old student of a female madrasa in Mouchak, was kidnapped and raped. They demanded that the accused be identified and arrested quickly and strict legal action be taken. The marchers requested that measures be strengthened to ensure the safety of the students of the madrasa and the protection of women and adolescents (especially girls living in the madrasa environment).
The speakers said that to prevent the recurrence of such crimes in the society, the culprits must be punished severely. “Rape is a heinous crime even in the Islamic social code” — such writing can be seen on a banner of the march.
Situation regarding local authorities and police
No official response was received from the local administration and police on the matter. If we ask about the allegations, if the responsible source or the police respond, it will be added to the news. The locals hope that the police will quickly start an investigation and identify the accused and take legal action.
Concerns of the village and madrasa community
There has been panic among the local madrasa authorities and the locals. Many parents and students have raised concerns about safety. The parents of the madrasa said that to prevent such accidents, stricter surveillance, fraternal care and measures to ensure the safety of students are needed in the madrasa and surrounding areas after evening.
Legal and social advice
Various human rights activists and organizations working to prevent violence against women have also demanded a balanced and expedited investigation and proper protection and mental health care for the affected child. They have advised the local administration to take immediate and effective steps so that similar incidents do not happen in the future.
What could happen next
The protesters said that if their demands are not met, they will follow other programs including stronger rallies and human chains. At the same time, they are demanding a speedy investigation into the case, arrest of the accused and assurance of fair trial.
News Brief—What is expected
The locals and people from different classes and levels of society are requesting for quick and visible legal action in this incident. Protection of the affected girl, safety of the madrasa students and punishment of the accused—these are their main demands. An official statement from the local police or administration will be added to the news as it becomes available.
