Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Abdus Salam has announced plans to bring rickshaws and autorickshaws under registration and licensing to build a disciplined transport system in the capital. He said that registration, numbers and licenses will be issued through the City Corporation to specify the identity and activities of the drivers.
He said these things at the Doa and Milad Mahfil organized on the occasion of the 45th martyrdom anniversary of martyred President Ziaur Rahman at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Monday (June 1). The program was organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Rickshaw, Van and Auto Drivers' Party.
Abdus Salam said that there is no plan to stop rickshaws, autorickshaws or vans. However, to reduce traffic congestion and bring discipline to urban transport, these vehicles must be brought under the rules. He said that a system is also being considered where the driver will mainly operate the transport in the area where he is driving.
He also expressed concern about the safety of battery-powered rickshaws. Stating that there is a risk of accidents due to the weakness of the braking system, he said that a safe operation system should be developed with the opinions of the drivers.
He also said that modern traffic management is being introduced in the capital to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and noise pollution. In addition to systems such as electronic traffic signals and automatic fines, there are plans to introduce effective control systems for rickshaws and auto-rickshaws. He said that an acceptable decision will be taken after discussing this with the driver organizations.
