Former mayor arrested in BNP office arson case

The District Detective Branch (DB) has arrested former Patharghata Municipality Mayor Anwar Hossain Akon in a case filed in connection with the arson incident at the Barguna District BNP office. The concerned police officials confirmed the matter on Monday (May 25).
According to police sources, he was arrested from his home in Patharghata Municipality late on Sunday night. Later, he was taken to Barguna and shown arrested in the related case.
According to law enforcement officials, he has been taken into custody as part of the investigation into the case filed in connection with the arson incident at the Barguna District BNP office. He is currently at the Barguna Sadar Police Station and will be sent to court after the necessary legal process.
Local sources said that he has not been seen in public much since August last year. It is also known that there are several other cases against him for financial irregularities related to various works of the municipality.
Meanwhile, discussions have started in the local political arena regarding the incident. It is believed that more information about the case may be known after the investigation is completed.
