A schoolteacher died in a tragic road accident in Kaliganj, Gazipur when an electricity pole broke and fell on a moving auto-rickshaw. Three others, including the auto-rickshaw driver, were injured in the incident.
The accident occurred at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday (May 5) in front of the power plant office in the Shimulia Railgate area of the Tongi-Kaliganj regional road.
The deceased, Sharmin Ferdos (47), was an assistant teacher at a primary school. The condition of two of the injured was critical and they have been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Eyewitnesses said that suddenly, several electricity poles on the Kaliganj connection line from Shimulia substation broke and fell on the road. As a result, a moving auto-rickshaw was crushed directly under the poles. Teacher Sharmin Ferdos was seriously injured on the spot and later died.
Meanwhile, when the pole collapsed, it fell into a pond next to the electricity line. As a result, the fish in the water were electrocuted and died and floated on the water, which spread panic among the locals.
Upon receiving the information, the fire service, police and electricity department personnel quickly reached the spot and started rescue work. Traffic on the road returned to normal around 9 pm after about three and a half hours.
The zonal officer of Kaliganj Rural Electricity said that initially it is believed that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the contractor company. He said that necessary action will be taken against those responsible after investigating the matter.
The incident has cast a shadow of mourning over the area and the locals have demanded that the safety of the road and electricity infrastructure be ensured immediately.
