A historic chapter has begun in the country's energy sector with the introduction of nuclear fuel uranium into the reactor at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna. The fuel loading process was inaugurated in the first unit on Tuesday afternoon amid tight security, through which Bangladesh has secured a new position in the list of countries using nuclear energy in the world.
The Minister of Science and Technology, high-level government representatives, international partners and experts were present at the inauguration ceremony. The uranium loading process was started by pressing an automatic switch at the ceremony. The speakers said that this project has been implemented after long preparations and ensuring maximum safety, which will take the country's technological capabilities to new heights.
According to experts, after uranium enters the reactor, water will be converted into steam through the heat generated, which will turn the turbine and generate electricity. This is an important final step before commercial power generation. According to the plan, after the phased trial production is completed, electricity supply to the national grid can start by next August.
The Rooppur project is one of the largest single power projects in the country's history, with a target of generating a total of 2,400 megawatts of electricity from two units. Those concerned hope that the implementation of this project will not only ensure the country's energy security, but also accelerate industrialization and economic development.
