The house of Gafur Mallick (78), a blind man from birth, in Pachuria Union of Rajbari Sadar Upazila, was attacked and looted by miscreants on Friday (January 30) evening. Gafur Mallick received financial assistance from BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The family claims that a group of people entered the house with country-made weapons, broke through the tin fence of the house, vandalized it and looted Tk 55,000 in cash. The attackers also vandalized the house of his brother Hanif Mallick and embezzled goods and money.
Gafur Mallick's son Baten Mallick filed a written complaint with Rajbari Sadar Police Station the same night after the incident. Nannu Sheikh, Saddam Sheikh and Rezaul Islam Nazir of Kholabaria village and some unidentified people have been named as accused in the complaint. The complaint states that the attack and looting were planned due to a business dispute.
Rajbari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khondaker Ziaur Rahman said that a case has been registered based on the complaint and a woman has been arrested. Efforts are underway to arrest the other absconding accused.
It is worth noting that 78-year-old Gafur Mallick has been earning a living by ferrying nuts and almonds on trains and buses for a long time. In tribute to his life struggle, on October 30, on the instructions of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, he was given financial assistance of Tk 170,000 from 'Amra BNP Paribas'.
