A clash took place between two BNP groups over playing loud music at a wedding in Rajoir, Madaripur. Two people were injured in the incident. Among the injured, former general secretary of Rajoir Municipality BNP Badshah Mir was in critical condition and has been sent to Dhaka.
The clash took place in two phases from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on Friday (January 9) at Beparipara intersection and West Rajoir village in Rajoir Municipality area of the district. During this time, a shop and two motorcycles were vandalized. The situation in the area is tense after the incident.
Police and local sources said that music was being played loudly on a sound box at the wedding ceremony of Shaheed Sheikh's daughter in West Rajoir village of Ward No. 5 of Rajoir Municipality. On Friday, Jahangir Khan (45), former convener of Rajoir Upazila Chhatra Dal and former UP member, forbade the music to be played during Friday prayers. Jahangir Khan had an argument with Shaheed's brother Oli Sheikh (40) inside the mosque over this.
As a result, people from both sides got into a clash with local weapons at Beparipara intersection in Rajoir Bazar in the evening. At that time, there was a chase and counter-chase and brickbats were thrown between the two sides. During the clash, Oli Sheikh's people vandalized a firewood shop and two motorcycles belonging to Jahangir Khan.
On receiving the information, the Rajoir Police Station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, when the people from Oli's side went to Jahangir Khan's house in West Rajoir village to resolve the matter, Badshah Mir, former general secretary of Rajoir Municipality BNP, was beaten up there. He was rescued and first taken to Rajoir Upazila Health Complex. From there, his condition deteriorated and he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Another person was injured in the incident.
Rajoir Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Aminul Islam said that after the clash stopped, one party went to the other party's house to talk about a resolution, and the incident of beating took place. The situation is currently normal and additional patrolling has been intensified in the area.
