10 baby snakes from one house, 11-foot cobra from another

The recovery of multiple poisonous Padma cobras from a house in Mirsarai Upazila of Chittagong has created extreme panic among the locals. A total of 11 snakes were recovered from two different areas of the upazila from the afternoon to evening on Friday (October 31) - including an adult Padma cobra and 10 babies.

Snake Rescue Team Bangladesh member Tarek Aziz said that on Friday afternoon, family members first saw small baby snakes in Dulal's house in Abdul Hakim Molla's house in the middle Azamnagar area of ​​Hinguli Union No. 2 of the upazila. Later, they informed the Snake Rescue Team, which went to the spot and rescued 10 baby Padma cobras from a room.

Shortly after this, in the evening, locals saw a large snake in another house in the Yarhat area of ​​Dhum Union and again informed the rescue team. Upon reaching the spot, they rescued an adult Padma Gokhra snake, about 11 feet long, from inside a rat hole.

A total of 11 venomous snakes that were rescued are currently in the custody of the Snake Rescue Team. Tarek Aziz said, “We will release all the snakes in the hilly area on Saturday (November 1) morning.”

Local residents said that they are panicking after so many venomous snakes and their babies were found in the house at the same time. Many are searching around their houses to find the snake in the surrounding areas and taking protective measures.

In this regard, Zakir Hossain, Hinguli Forest Bit Officer of Mirsarai Upazila, said, “I have not yet received any news of the Padma Gokhra snake being rescued from the house. However, we will look into the matter.”

Local environmentalists say that the habitat of snakes is being destroyed due to the construction of houses near the hilly area, as a result of which they are entering the houses in search of food or shelter.

Meanwhile, while National Cooperative Day was being celebrated in Ramgati on the same day, the rescue operation of the poisonous Padma Gokhara has become the focus of people's discussion in Mirsarai. The common people have called on the local administration and the forest department to respond quickly to such incidents.
