The Upazila Fisheries Office has distributed 30 maunds of jatka seized during a drive in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali to various orphanages. The drive was conducted on Saturday (April 27) night in the Bhuiyarhat Bazar area of Steamerghat No. 4 of the upazila.
The government declares the period from November 1 to May 31 every year as the 'jatka conservation period'. During this time, catching, selling, storing and transporting jatka (small hilsa) is completely prohibited and a punishable offense. However, in the greed for more profits, some unscrupulous businessmen lure poor fishermen to harvest jatka by offering them money. Due to debt pressure, fishermen are forced to kill jatka during the prohibited time.
Based on a secret tip-off, the Upazila Fisheries Office conducted a drive in Khaser Hat Bazar on Saturday night and seized a large quantity of jatka. Later, Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Faizur Rahman distributed the seized fish to the nearby orphanages.
Confirming the matter, Fisheries Officer Md. Faizur Rahman said, “Based on secret information, we were able to seize this large consignment. Later, the fish were distributed to the orphanage. If these fish were big, both the fishermen and the traders would have benefited, but for a little greed, the jatka is being killed, which is very harmful for the future.”
He also said that currently small jatka are being sold in the market at a price of 200 to 250 taka per kg. Everyone should be aware and vigilant. At the same time, he announced to continue the campaign against the killing of jatka.
