Prime Minister Tareque Rahman is set to embark on a four-day official visit to Japan at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. He is scheduled to depart from Dhaka for Tokyo at 12:10 AM on Sunday (October 25) aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.

The visit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Japan, expanding trade, and creating new investment opportunities. On Tuesday (October 27), Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will hold high-level talks with the Japanese Prime Minister in Tokyo. The discussions are expected to cover a review of existing cooperation between the two nations, as well as strategies for further expanding their economic ties.

In addition to delivering a keynote address at the Japan-Bangladesh Economic Forum, the Prime Minister will meet with prominent Japanese business leaders. His itinerary also includes discussions with top officials from JICA, JETRO, JBIC, and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, along with potential visits to an LNG terminal, a power plant, the Uniqlo headquarters, and a Toyota manufacturing facility.

Key topics for discussion during the visit include increasing Japanese investment in Bangladesh, generating new employment opportunities, advancing infrastructure development, facilitating technology transfer, and fostering the growth of a skilled workforce. Furthermore, the implementation of the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)—signed in February 2026—is also expected to be on the agenda. This agreement is anticipated to further broaden trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

According to Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, the visit may see the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) or the announcement of new collaborative initiatives across various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, skills development, trade, environmental conservation, and the modernization of local government systems. The visit is viewed as a significant opportunity to further strengthen the economic partnership between the two nations.
