A recent UN report has revealed details of a shocking incident that took place in Bangladesh. At a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said that the death of Abu Sayeed, a student at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was an extrajudicial killing.
The UN report said that he was shot at least twice with a shotgun loaded with metal bullets from a distance of 14 meters. Forensic analysis found in the investigation has further strengthened this claim.
"This brutal response was a planned and coordinated strategy by the former government, which wanted to suppress the people's movement to retain power."
The UN says that the police were used to suppress the movement, using widespread arrests, detentions, torture and extrajudicial killings.
"This is not just an isolated incident, but part of a larger crackdown." The UN believes that ensuring justice is essential for national healing and the future of Bangladesh.
The UN report on the death of Abu Sayeed has generated widespread international reaction. It remains to be seen what action the Bangladesh government takes now. Stay tuned for more details.
