Bangladesh has slipped two places in the corruption index in 2024, according to Transparency International (TI). This time, Bangladesh is ranked 151st, where it was 149th last time. On the other hand, Bangladesh is ranked 14th out of 180 countries in terms of corruption, where it was 10th last year.
According to TI's report, Bangladesh's position in South Asia is still behind Myanmar and Afghanistan in terms of corruption index. Although Bangladesh's score is 23, Bhutan (score 72) is in the best position in South Asia, followed by India (score 38) and Maldives.
TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said at a press conference, "The corruption situation has worsened during the tenure of the current government. This situation has arisen due to the lack of effective measures to prevent corruption."
He also noted that the steps taken by the government to prevent corruption were limited to words, not practical steps. This deterioration has even been caused by the state appeasement of the corrupt and the lack of proper implementation of the law.
The TI report ranked Sudan as the most corrupt country in the world, and Denmark ranked first as the least corrupt country.
