From today, trains will no longer run on the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge. After a long wait, the new Jamuna Rail Bridge was opened. Rajshahi's Silk City Express will be the first passenger train to cross the new bridge today.
Jamuna Rail Bridge Project Director Al Fattah Md. Masudur Rahman said that regular trains will run on this new bridge from Wednesday morning. For now, trains will run on one line, but both lines will be opened after the official inauguration on February 18.
The length of this bridge is 4.8 kilometers. Construction work began in 2020, and the cost was about 16,781 crore taka. Japan's JICA provided the main financing.
The Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge, which was opened in 1998, has had train speeds reduced since 2008 due to cracks, increasing the suffering of passengers. The country's longest rail bridge was built to solve that problem.
The railway authorities hope that the opening of this new bridge will make train communication between Dhaka and the northwestern region easier.
