Out of 10 million family card holders of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), 3.7 million cards are fake, said SK Bashir Uddin, Commerce Advisor to the interim government.
He disclosed this information at the symposium of the White Paper Preparation Committee 2024 at BICC in Agargaon, capital on Saturday. The main discussion of the symposium was economic management, reforms and national budget.
The Commerce Advisor said, “The movement has taken place because inequality has arisen in the society. It can be eliminated through policy changes.”
Referring to the tax system, he said, “Both direct and indirect taxes are important. However, their proper implementation is more important.”
Stating that banks have made unethical profits even during the economic downturn, he stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Honorary Fellow of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Head of the White Paper Preparation Committee, criticized the decision to increase VAT at the symposium.
He said, “The increase in VAT will further increase the financial pressure on the people, which is unacceptable in the current economic situation.”
Various other important issues were also discussed at the discussion meeting.
