Former Jatiya Party MP Golam Faruk Obi, the only accused in the chargesheet in the murder case of model Syeda Tania Mahbub Tinni, who was murdered about 23 years ago, has been acquitted. Dhaka's 2nd Additional District and Sessions Judge Mosha Shahinur Akhter announced the verdict on Tuesday.

According to the case records, on the night of November 10, 2002, the body of model Tinni was found next to pillar number 11 of China Friendship Bridge number 1 on the Buriganga River in Keraniganj. The next day, the then Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Keraniganj Police Station Md. Safi Uddin filed a case against an unknown accused.

The first investigation officer in the case was the then Sub-Inspector of that police station Md. Qayyum Ali Sardar. Then, when the picture of the body of the deceased Tinni was published in the newspaper, a relative of the deceased, Sujan, identified it.

The case was assigned to the CID as a sensational murder case on November 24, 2002. CID Inspector Fazlur Rahman was given the responsibility of the investigation. Later, the investigators submitted a charge sheet, which included 41 witnesses and 22 pieces of evidence.

Although former MP Golam Faruk Abhi was initially accused, he could not be arrested. In 2010, the Seventh Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka framed charges against Abhi.

The verdict in the case was scheduled for November 15, 2021. However, when two important witnesses, Tinni's father and uncle, wanted to testify on that day, the court did not announce the verdict and fixed it for taking testimony again.
