One-third of banking sector's money lost, 20 million depositors in trouble: Governor

About 20 million depositors are facing problems due to major irregularities in the country's banking sector, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostakur Rahman.
He alleged that one-third of the banking sector's money was lost through irregularities during the previous government's tenure, which is currently being seen as defaulted loans.
He made these remarks while delivering a speech at a program on 'Bangla QR' organized by Dutch-Bangla Bank at Dhaka University on Thursday (August 6).
Concerns about defaulted loans
The governor said that currently the total amount of defaulted loans in the banking sector is about 36 percent, which is a matter of great concern for the country's financial system.
He said that in this situation, reform steps are being taken to bring the banking sector back to normal.
18-month plan to reduce defaulted loans
Mostakur Rahman said that a special 18-month plan has been adopted to reduce defaulted loans.
According to the plan—
In the first six months, an opportunity will be given to settle the debt under certain conditions.
In the next one year, initiatives will be taken to manage troubled assets using the Distressed Asset Management Act and the Financial Debt Court Act.
He expressed hope that the two relevant laws may be passed in the next session of parliament.
Strict action against irregularities
The governor said that proper implementation of the law will be ensured to restore discipline in the banking sector.
He also said that the highest punitive action will be taken against those concerned if any irregularities are proven.
Plan to create 5,000 new entrepreneurs
At this time, the governor said that initiatives have been taken to create young entrepreneurs. Keeping in mind the issue of the youth associated with the July movement, 5,000 new entrepreneurs will be created.
He said that 10 young entrepreneurs will be selected from each upazila of the country. The selected ones will be below 28 years of age.
