The police have intervened in the human chain program organized in front of the bank's head office in Motijheel to protest the appointment of the new chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, Md. Khurshid Alam. During the program, the protesters were removed using water cannons and sound grenades.
The program was organized on Monday (June 1) morning under the banner of 'Islami Bank Customer Forum'. The organizers alleged that the police prevented them from continuing the human chain shortly after the program started.
Bank-related sources said that after the program started around 9:30 am, the participants prepared to display various banners and festoons. However, the police dispersed them within a short time using water cannons and sound grenades.
The protesters claimed that they were peacefully protesting against the decision to appoint a new chairman. Earlier, programs were held in different parts of the country with the same demand.
The police said that the program did not have the necessary permission and that the participants were taking positions on the road, which created a risk of disruption to traffic. They were removed to bring the situation under control.
Tension and panic prevailed in Bankpara, Motijheel, at the time of the incident. Later, additional police were deployed in the area and the situation was brought under control.
