Former President of the Awami League government, who was ousted in a student-public uprising, Md. Abdul Hamid has left the country. According to a report by More News, he left Dhaka for Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG 340 at 3:05 am on Wednesday.

Responsible sources at Shahjalal International Airport confirmed to More News that Abdul Hamid arrived at the airport around 11 pm. After completing all the immigration procedures, he received the green signal to leave the country.

A senior officer of the Immigration Department of the Special Branch (SB) of the police said, “I came to know this morning that former President Abdul Hamid has left the country. If he is an accused in any case, the matter was not in our notice. Generally, no one can be prevented from traveling without a specific ban from the court.”

He further said, “According to Articles 34 and 102 of the Constitution, if a Bangladeshi citizen is prevented from traveling abroad, a court order is required. We have not received any such ban against Abdul Hamid. We did not have any application or warrant to arrest him in any case.”

However, More News’ investigation revealed that there is a murder case against the former president. A case was filed at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station on January 14 of this year, in which Abdul Hamid was made the main accused. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul and top Awami League leader Obaidul Quader have also been made accused in the same case.

Earlier, before the January 14 case, more than fifty cases were filed against Awami League leaders in Kishoreganj district, but Abdul Hamid’s name was not in them. He left the country soon after his name came up in the new case.

Various speculations are going on in the political arena about the former president’s sudden departure from the country. Many believe that he decided to leave the country in the context of the lawsuit and political unrest.
