Various countries around the world are mourning the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian along with six of his travel companions in a helicopter crash. At least 4 countries of the world have already announced mourning over Raisi's death.
Syria and Lebanon have declared three days of national mourning in Raisi's memory. Both these countries are close allies of Iran. Iran provides regular support to Lebanon-based armed Islamist group Hezbollah; And without Iran's direct support, the Bashar al-Assad-led government in Syria would not have survived for more than a decade.
Lebanon's Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib said in a press conference on Monday, "I cannot express to you the extent of my pain after hearing the news (of the death). I deeply respected the president of Iran, the foreign minister of the country was a very good friend of mine.
In his personal condolence message, the Syrian President expressed his sincere condolences over the death of Raisi and his travel companions.
Meanwhile, India-Pakistan has also announced a one-day national mourning for Raisi's death. A spokesperson of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs of India said that this mourning will be observed tomorrow, Tuesday. On this day, the Indian flag will be at half-mast in all government and semi-government buildings across India, and any state celebrations will also be suspended on this day.
After the news of Raisi's death was published, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a message posted on social media X, "We will always remember the role that President Raisi has played in his short tenure in promoting friendly relations between India and Iran. I am deeply saddened by his death and offer my sincere condolences to his family members.'
Pakistan has also announced a day of mourning on this issue. The country's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in an interview on Monday, "Pakistan is burdened by the death of our brother country Iran President Ibrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian and their traveling companions. In this bereaved situation, it has been decided to observe state mourning tomorrow (Tuesday). On this day, the national flag will be kept at half-mast across the country.
On Sunday, the chopper helicopter carrying President Raisi crashed in the mountainous region of the Iran-Azerbaijan border. In the helicopter, Raisoor was accompanied by 6 people, including Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian.
The wreckage of the copter was found on Monday. Iranian government officials said that none of the passengers of the destroyed chopper survived.
