Pakistan lost the wicket of opener Abdullah Shafiq for only 3 runs. The big responsibility of handling that shock was on the shoulders of the captain Shan Masood. However, Bangladeshi pacer Shariful Islam edged the ball and caught him behind the wicket. His innings ended at just 6 runs off 11 balls. But Masud claimed that the ball touched the pad and not the bat. With which he was expressing his unhappy attitude even when he returned to the dressing room.
Incident of the seventh over of the innings. Shariful's back-of-length fifth delivery went through the middle of the bat-pad of the Pakistan captain and landed in the gloves of Liton Das. The fielders immediately appealed, but the umpire did not respond. Shariful at the bowling end was adamant, Nazmul Hossain Shanto took a review after seeing his confidence. After watching the replay, the TV umpire changed the decision of the field umpire.
As seen on TV replays, the ultra-edge spike appeared before the ball crossed Masood's bat-pad. The anger of the Pakistani batsmen may be due to the fact that the spike marks were seen after crossing the bat. Masud could not accept the decision given by TV umpire Michael Gough. He might have meant that the ball touched the pad and not the bat.
Before leaving the crease, Shan Masood was seen protesting the umpire's decision. After exchanging a few words with on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough, he left the field in anger. He was later seen talking to the coaching staff in the dressing room on the TV screen about his outing.
The video of Shariful getting out is being discussed on social media. Even Pakistan Cricket's official X (formerly Twitter) account shared the video and asked in the caption – 'Out or not out?'
After the departure of Masud, Pakistan fell into further disaster as Babar Azam returned with the call. Shariful also returned him. He hit the second ball of the ninth over of the innings outside the leg stump. Babar was caught behind the wicket by the outside edge of that short length ball. This former captain has returned after being called. Which is his eighth Test call. Despite losing three wickets for just 16 runs, Pakistan turned around with the pair of Saim Ayyub and Saud Shakeel. Sime's fifty took three wickets for the hosts to cross the 100-run mark.
