Farooq Ahmed is the new president of Bangladesh Cricket Board. He is the former captain and former chief selector of the national cricket team. He was the first among the former captains to hold the post of Cricket Board President.
Bangladesh Cricket Board was born after independence. The first Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of Bangladesh was Professor Yusuf Ali. He was minister and president of all federations. Bangladesh Cricket Board has had more than ten presidents since Yusuf Ali. Some of them were ministers, MPs or military figures.
Since 1998, the election system has started in the sports field of Bangladesh. Even though the election was held, the post of Cricket Board President was nominated by the government. No MP or government nominee has held this post. Elected as president since 2013. Nazmul Hasan Papon was elected for three consecutive terms. Although he passed two terms fully, he could not complete the third term completely. Papon resigned and was replaced by Farooq Ahmed.
The former captains of the national team are on the current board. Test debut captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Akram Khan and Khaled Mahmud Sujan have been working as directors since the last three terms. Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, the first captain of Bangladesh ODI team, was the interim board director in 2007.
Other former captains include Habibul Bashar Sumon, Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Shahriar Nafees who worked with the Cricket Board but did not become directors. Former captain Farooq Ahmed was never the director of the cricket board. He has worked as Chief Selector in Cricket Board. At one time, he returned to the board after a decade in the service of the board as the head of the board.
