The conscious student society of Bangladesh was vocal in the struggle for the right to education since the East Pakistan period.
"Education is not an opportunity, it is a right, education is not commercialization, education is for all, it is the responsibility of the state to educate the people, education is not for any special group"
It is a sad but true fact that even in 53 years of independence, education system aimed at universal welfare has not been established in Bangladesh. Rather, Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP Chairman Jebel Rahman Gani and Secretary General M. commented that there is anarchy in the education system. Golam Mostafa Bhuiya said, We hope that the 'Education Commission' will be announced soon because the development, integrity and true professionalism of every department of the country is closely related to education reform. The previous governments gave a lot of 'lip service' in the education sector and flooded the rest of the state with illegitimate facilities. As a result, to no benefit to the people, the governments have completely destroyed these institutions to maintain their power and have always neglected education. So people have high hopes that the current government will take the education to a level that will be world class and for that the formation of 'Education Commission' is essential.
Bangladesh NAP leaders said these things in a statement sent to the media on the occasion of the 62nd Education Day on Tuesday (September 17).
They said, remembering this day in 1962, the united efforts of the patriots and the effective action of the government should be taken against the anarchic conditions in the current education system. September 17, 1962 is a unique day in the beginning of history of student movement. The glorious day of self-sacrifice has been observed by the students of Bangladesh as 'Education Day'. There has never been such bloodshed and agitation for the demand of education in this country.
The leaders said that education is also a fundamental right of the citizens of the country. It is a constitutional responsibility of the state to establish mass-oriented and universal education system. Although there have been many improvements since independence, we have not yet reached the desired goal. Increasing the allocation of money in the education sector and making the highest education free, it is necessary to take steps to stop the commercialization of education and also it is the responsibility of the state to ensure a democratic environment by electing student councils in every campus.
They said that the movement against the Sharif Education Commission in 1962, the movement against the Hamidur Rahman Education Commission in 1966 and the six-point movement, the Noor Khan Education Commission in 1969 and the popular uprising in 1971 and the great liberation war of 1971 provided deep inspiration for the history of the protest against this education policy. And movements.
The leaders also said, Let us take an oath in the month of Great Education Day in September, we will not let the dreams of the martyrs in the anti-discrimination movement, including the education movement of 69, go in vain. We will not let education become a commodity. Education will be free for all. It will be open to all ages, all castes, all. Education will not be restricted to the elite class. The light of education will be delivered to everyone's homes. Paying respect to the martyrs of the education movement. Let education day be immortal. We have a long way to go to achieve our goals.
It should be noted that on September 17, 1962, a nation-wide strike was held under the leadership of the then Chhatra Sangram Parishad in protest against the education policy of the Education Commission formed by the dictator Ayub Khan. During the hartal called by the students, incidents of baton-charges, tear gas and firing occurred at Pushil. Golam Mustafa, Babul and Waziullah were martyred. Since then the student community has been observing the day as a great education day of struggle and tradition.
