King Abdullah of Jordan has appointed one of his most important advisers, Zafar Hassan, as Prime Minister. The royal court of the country confirmed in a statement that he was appointed on Sunday.
Former Prime Minister Bisher Khasaune submitted his resignation letter to the King after completing the term of the government and cabinet. King Abdullah appointed Zafar Hasan as the new prime minister within hours of his letter.
Although Khasaune has submitted his resignation letter, he is not completely resigning from government duties. According to the Jordanian constitution, he will remain an adviser to the current prime minister until a new cabinet is formed.
Geographically, the country of Middle East and West Asia region, Jordan has a parliamentary system of government since 1929. However, according to the Jordanian constitution, most of the power rests with the king. He has the power to appoint heads of government and dissolve parliament. The King's opinion is considered final on any government issue.
The lower house of Jordan's bicameral parliament is the House of Representatives and the upper house is the Senate. The total number of seats in the House of Representatives is 195 and the members of this house come to power through direct election. The king appointed the members of the senate.
According to the constitution, the term of the country's parliament is 4 years. Elections were held on Tuesday of last week in Jordan; The result was announced on the same day. In compliance with the constitutional obligation, Bisher Khasaune submitted the exemption letter to the king on Sunday.
The new Prime Minister Zafar Hasan is a graduate of Harvard University in the United States. Until now he was an adviser to King Abdullah in the status of technocrat. His acceptance in the country is also good.
But he has taken over as the country's head of government at a time when Jordan is going through difficult times. Operations in the Gaza Strip and regular clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in the West Bank have had an impact on the country's economy. Tourism, the country's main economic sector, has collapsed since the war broke out in October last year.
According to government data, growth in Jordan was 2 percent last fiscal year. This is one of the examples of annual low growth in the country's history.
