Batting failure has become a nightmare for Bangladesh again. The Tigers lost the series by a huge margin of 99 runs in the last match of the three-match ODI series. With this victory, the hosts Sri Lanka won the series 2-1.
The Sri Lankans won the toss and elected to bat first in Pallekele on Tuesday. Although they did not start well, they turned things around in the middle. Madushka was dismissed for just 1 run at the beginning of the innings, but the second wicket partnership of Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nishanka came to 56 runs. Nishanka was dismissed by Tanvir Islam for 35 runs.
After that, despite some setbacks, the pair of Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka returned the team to the driver's seat again. They made a great partnership of 124 runs for the fourth wicket. The hero of the innings, Kusal Mendis, played a magnificent innings of 124 runs off 114 balls, which was the 6th ODI century of his career and his second century against Bangladesh. Asalanka added 58 runs.
Bangladesh's bowlers made a comeback towards the end. They quickly took a few wickets and restricted the Sri Lankans to 285 runs. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed and Mehedi Hasan Miraj took two wickets each. Tanjim Hasan Shakib, Tanvir Islam and Shamim Hossain took one wicket each.
However, Bangladesh faced disaster from the start when they started chasing the target. Due to the failure of the batters, the team was bowled out for just 186 runs in 39.4 overs. Towhid Hridoy scored the highest 51 runs for the team. Emon and Miraj scored the second highest 28 runs each. In addition, Zaker Ali scored 27, Tanjid Hasan 17 and Shamim Hossain 12 runs.
The Tiger batting lineup completely surrendered to the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The series of wickets continued to fall – both at the beginning and at the end.
With this loss, Bangladesh lost the series 2-1. The fact that the batting failures and the lack of coordination in the middle order have not yet been overcome became clear in the last match of the series.
