Sajib Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said that no one from the Sheikh family is coming to the central leadership of Awami League or politics at the moment.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India after resigning in the face of mass protests in Bangladesh. The decision to resign was taken a day earlier but was not announced then, his son said.
Sajib Wazed Joy said in an interview given to Deutsche Welle's Bengali section on Tuesday night (August 6) that he made the decision a day ago. A few of us only knew that he would announce that he was resigning and that his plan was to have a transition of power as per the constitution. But when they started marching towards that public building. Then we said in fear that there is no more time. You must leave now.
In Bangladesh, the quota movement turned into a mass movement and several hundred lives were lost. Allegations have been made from various quarters that the Hasina government has used excessive force to suppress the agitators. Sheikh Hasina quickly left the country with her sister Sheikh Rehana in the face of intense agitation.
In response to a question about the leadership of Awami League, Sajib Wazed Joy said that he has no plans to enter politics at present. No member of the Sheikh family has any reason to enter politics.
He said, three times there was a queue against our family. Three times I lost everything and had to stay abroad. Except me and my mother, we all have been abroad for a long time. We are settled here. We have no difficulty in life here. We are used to being here.
Stating that no decision has been taken that Sheikh Hasina will go anywhere else from India, he said, Sheikh Hasina is fine, she is now in Delhi. My sister is with him. My sister lives in Delhi. He is fine, but very upset.
Joy said that she is very sad that her father gave his life for the country, the whole family lost their lives. None of us could have imagined that the people of the country for which he served jail time, worked so hard, and developed so much, would insult him like this and attack him.
Sajib Wazed Joy also said that he will meet his mother in Delhi soon.
