Jamaat-Shibir banned Today, notification from Home Ministry bans Jamaat-Shibir by executive order. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student organization Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir are being banned today (Wednesday) by the executive order. A notification will be issued from the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs banning the group opposing independence.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque told reporters yesterday that Jamaat-Shibir will be banned on July 30. After that, he also had a meeting with the Home Minister yesterday.
When asked when the notification banning Jamaat-Shibir will be issued on Wednesday morning, he said, "You will see, wait a little." It (prohibition notification) is from the Home Ministry, I don't have it from the (Law Ministry) now.'
Regarding the process of banning a political party, the concerned officials said, to ban a political party, the political section of the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs sends the file to the Ministry of Law for its opinion with appropriate reasons. The Law Ministry sent the file back to Home Affairs with an opinion. If the Ministry of Home Affairs deems it necessary, it also sends the file to the Prime Minister. A notification is issued by the Public Security Department after positive opinions are received from all over the proposal to ban a party.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 150 people, including the police, were killed in the conflict-violence surrounding the students' quota movement. However, according to private estimates, this number is more than two hundred. During the agitation, state broadcaster BTV, Banani's Setu Bhavan, Mohakhali's disaster management building, metro rail station and other government buildings were vandalized and set on fire. The government is claiming that BNP and Jamaat-Shibir are involved in this violence.
