Jatiya Party (JP) chairman and former minister Anwar Hossain Manju has been barred from going abroad by immigration authorities. He was stopped from boarding a flight to Singapore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday night.
Airport sources said that he was scheduled to board Singapore Airlines flight SQ 447 at 11:55 pm. After completing check-in at around 9 pm, he was stopped at immigration. However, the reason for the barred travel abroad has not been officially informed.
There are several murder cases against Anwar Hossain Manju related to the anti-discrimination student movement. According to close sources, he was going to Singapore for medical treatment. Earlier, on September 2, 2024, after being detained from Dhanmondi, the police released him on the same day.
Manju, a six-time MP from Pirojpur-2, contested the 12th National Parliament election in 2024 as a candidate of the 14-party alliance and lost to independent candidate Mohiuddin Maharaj. He was the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the second-term government of the Awami League. He was also once the editor of Dainik Ittefaq and a top leader of the Jatiya Party led by Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Later, he formed his own party, Jatiya Party (JP), and became its chairman.
