A Juba Dal leader has been accused of beating to death a Chhatra League worker named Rashed Sikder (22) in Gournadi, Barisal. The incident took place on Friday (August 16) around 8:00 p.m. at Barthi bus stand of the upazila.
Hasnu Begum, the mother of the victim, said that my son Rashed went to his village home Gournadi from Dhaka on Friday afternoon to see his grandson Rafsan (2) and went home after Friday prayers.
Sumi Akhter, the wife of the deceased said, Chhatra Dal worker Saimun called my husband on the mobile and asked him to go to Barthi Bazar after evening. Then my husband went to the market. There he was beaten and seriously injured.
Russell Shikder, elder brother of the deceased, said Rashed was looking after my business in Islambagh area of Dhaka. Barthi Union Chhatra Dal president Alamin Talukder and his brother Hamim Talukder were demanding a contribution of Tk 1 lakh from my brother Rashed Shikder. Otherwise, he was threatening that he would not be allowed to stay in the area. For non-payment of subscription, Rashed was called around 8 pm on Friday and 10/15 people including Alamin Talukder, Chhatra Dal workers Saimun Talukder, Hamim Talukder were beaten up. To protect himself, Rashed ran and took shelter in Kamrul's shop in Barthi Bazar. From there, the attackers took Barthi to the bus stand and beat Rashed severely and cracked his head. After that he was taken to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex and the doctor on duty sent him to Barisal Medical College Hospital. Due to the deterioration of the condition, the doctors asked to be taken to Dhaka and we died on the way to Dhaka.
Businessman Kamrul said, because Rashed took refuge in my shop, the attackers vandalized my shop and motorcycle.
In this regard, upazila BNP convening committee member Mizanur Rahman Mintu said, whoever the murderer is, they should be quickly arrested and brought to justice.
Vipul Sarkar, general secretary of Barthi Union Volunteer League, said that Rashed Shikder did not enter the field and do politics. He (Rashed) was posting various times in support of Chhatra League on his Facebook ID. Vipul Sarkar claimed that he was killed in a planned manner because he supported the Chhatra League.
Gournadi police station officer-in-charge (OC) Anwar Hossain said that Rashed's body was recovered and sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. Alleging that Rashed was beaten to death without receiving the demanded contribution, Russell Shikder, the brother of the deceased, filed a case against five to six unknown persons, naming five people as the plaintiff. An operation is underway to arrest the accused.
