In the context of the prevailing situation in the country, the National Lawyers Federation has proposed 13 points for consideration by the interim government.
On Thursday (August 15), the president of the central executive committee of the organization, Advocate Sheikh Muhammad Sirajul Islam, proposed these 13 points.
The proposals are-
1. Establishing Islamic ideals and values and ensuring the dignity of all religions.
2. To establish the equality of all citizens in the light of the 'Madina Charter' of World Humanity's Mahamukti Sanad.
3. Declaring August 5, 2024 as 'Students' Revolution Day' or 'National Revolution Day' or 'Bangladesh Revolution Day' and declaring the day a public holiday. Granting statehood to those killed in the recent revolution and providing appropriate punishment for those involved in killings and terrorist activities.
5. Dividing Bangladesh into required number of provinces by introducing federal system of governance with the aim of building a new Bangladesh.
6. To ensure the rule of law and justice, to formulate specific national policies for the appointment of judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and to introduce modern laws for judges of subordinate courts and tribunals.
7. Strengthening communal harmony in the light of the saying 'Religion belongs to all, Bangladesh belongs to all'.
8. Establishing a Circuit Bench of the High Court Division on an urgent basis to clear the tangle of cases.
9. To ensure equality of opportunity for all citizens, except backward and disabled citizens, in getting appointment or promotion in public works.
10. Not to formulate any anti-religious curriculum in education.
11. Taking a deliberate decision to introduce Your Honor instead of My Lord/Your Lordship in addressing judges.
12. Exemplary punishment against criminals with a view to stopping terrorism, corruption and extortion forever.
13. Establishing a separate secretariat for the Judiciary with a view to implementing a judicial system free from administrative interference.
