Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 in the face of the mass uprising of the students. Soon after, a group of people targeted Gana Bhavan, the official residence of the Prime Minister.
Thousands of people looted money, furniture, saris-jewellery and even poultry from public buildings. Among the goods looted from Ganobhaban on that day, some persons brought a chest from Rayer Bazar area of Mohammadpur police station. 16 lakhs was in the chest. When a conflict started over the sharing of this money, the news went to the law enforcement agencies. On receiving the information, a team of security forces and RAB went and recovered eight lakh taka.
The money was recovered from Rayerbazar Battala area of Mohammadpur police station of the capital on Monday (August 12) night.
An official who took part in the operation on condition of anonymity said that 5 to 6 people brought the coffin from the Ganabhaban. Then one of them went to the village house with some money. The rest of the money remains with one. When a conflict started over the sharing of this money, one of them called the army and gave information about the money. Later yesterday, the money was recovered from a house in Rayerbazar.
Witnesses said a man told the army that money was found in a bag near his house. Later the army went and recovered the money. Army patrol team accepted the money in the presence of some local dignitaries.
Another official who participated in the raid said, "We went to the spot after receiving the information and recovered eight lakh taka." Efforts are underway to recover the rest of the money. No one has been arrested in this incident.
