Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Miz Farida Akhtar said that the estimated loss in this sector so far is about Tk 2000 crore, including loss of livestock and poultry feed and other animal feed due to ongoing floods.
He said these things at the end of the briefing of the Fish and Livestock Advisor on the occasion of the details of the loss of fish and livestock due to flash floods on Sunday (August 25).
He said that the fisheries sector continues to make an important contribution in meeting the food security and nutritional needs of the growing population of the country, creating employment and alleviating poverty. The importance of fisheries and livestock sector is immense in the need for conservation of fisheries and livestock, use of modern technology in the fisheries and livestock sector, contribution of the fisheries and livestock sector to the national economy, increase in export earnings, poverty alleviation through employment generation and socio-economic development of the country.
He said that 86 upazilas of 12 districts were affected by flash floods in Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna divisions recently. In this terrible flood in the memory, the fish and livestock sectors were severely damaged along with the loss of life and property. This resulted in the death of many livestock and extensive damage to infrastructure, including being washed away. Moreover, cattle and poultry feed and other animal feed are wasted. Estimated loss in this sector so far is around Tk 411 crore including milk, eggs.
He said, to overcome the losses, supply and distribution of emergency fodder, vaccination against diseases of cattle and poultry and distribution of grass cuttings will be done.
He also said that in the fisheries sector, 86 upazilas of 12 districts of Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna divisions have suffered irreparable damage due to sudden floods. The number of damaged ponds/dighi/farms is 1 lakh 80 thousand 899, the amount of damaged fish and shrimps is 90 thousand 768 tons, the amount of damaged fish fry and shrimp post larvae is 3 thousand 746 lakhs, the total amount of damage including infrastructure is about 1 thousand 539 crore 36 lakh taka.
He said that rehabilitation programs will be undertaken for the affected fishermen, providing loans on easy terms, developing flood forecasting and warning systems, conducting training and awareness programs for fishermen to deal with post-flood situations, providing necessary infrastructure support to protect fish farms and open water bodies. Seedlings can be distributed among the farmers in flood affected areas with the unspent funds of Abmukt program.
