One of the most discussed judges in the history of Bangladesh is AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik. His various activities while serving as a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court have given rise to discussions. Even after his retirement in 2015, Justice Manik was the talk of the town. He was also unique in the bench of Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Amir Delawar Hossain Saeedee's appeal. He was the only one who gave the death sentence to Delaware Hossain Saeedee in the verdict.
Justice Manik was almost always in discussion due to various controversial activities. Even after retirement, he still had 161 cases to write judgments. Manik got into a conflict with the then Chief Justice SK Sinha over this. He gave controversial judgments in several cases on behalf of the previous Awami League government. Even during the recent quota reform movement, Justice Manik participated in various media talk shows and made various indecent comments about the students.
It is alleged that Sheikh Hasina appointed Manik as a judge after dinging 21 judges. Manik dragged a traffic sergeant to court for not saluting the High Court judge's car.
Besides, Justice Manik has the feat of going to London by buying an economy class ticket and forcing himself to sit in a business class seat. He bought three houses in London for £32,000. But Justice Manik did not reveal the source of that income. A few months after his retirement, Manik wrote several judgments. Due to his controversial verdict, Bangladesh Supreme Court decided to avoid 161 cases ruled by Manik.
