The country's defense minister said that a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace during an attack on the Ukrainian border. Romania quickly sent F-16 fighter jets into the incident on Saturday, but the drone returned to Ukrainian airspace.

Romanian Defense Minister Iunut Mosteanu said that the Russian drone was flying very low and the pilots almost got close to shooting it down. However, the drone left the airspace and headed towards Ukraine before that.

At the same time, Poland also deployed fighter jets in its airspace due to the drone threat and temporarily closed an airport in the city of Lublin for security reasons. Three days earlier, the country had shot down several Russian drones with the help of NATO.

A statement from the Romanian Defense Ministry said that two F-16 fighter jets and later two Eurofighter jets were scrambled after the drone was detected in the airspace. At the same time, residents of Tulcea County, which borders the Danube River and the Ukrainian border, were ordered to take shelter. The statement added that the drone disappeared from radar southwest of the village of Chilia Veche.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media that according to information received, the Russian drone entered Romanian airspace about 10 kilometers and stayed in NATO airspace for about 50 minutes. He said, “This is a clear attempt to spread war on the part of Russia. Further sanctions and tariffs against them, as well as a collective defense system, are necessary.”

NATO member Romania shares a 650-kilometer border with Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the country has had several incidents of Russian drone debris falling in the country.

Following the incident, Swedish Foreign Minister Mariya Malmö responded to the Stena Line report by saying, "This is another unacceptable violation of NATO airspace. Sweden stands by Romania and is always ready to play a role in NATO's defense."

NATO has already taken steps to strengthen additional security in eastern Europe.
