Among the cities in Asia, the Japanese capital Tokyo is currently facing a new crisis, which is sex tourism. Once an economically prosperous city, it is now becoming a center for the sex trade. Especially in the post-COVID-19 era, economic problems and increasing poverty have forced many women to work as sex workers. Yoshide Tanaka, secretary-general of the Liaison Council Protecting Youth, noted that many young women are entering the sex industry to make a living, and the presence of foreign men has also increased, especially Chinese nationals.
Yoshide Tanaka, secretary-general of the Liaison Council Protecting Youth, an organization that works with young people, told The Star, "Japan has become a poor country. Sex is being sold in the park next to our organization. Especially in the post-COVID-19 era, many foreign men are seen around the park."
“We are seeing more foreign men now. They are coming from different countries. There are whites, Asians, blacks — but mostly from China. Young women in their 20s are choosing the sex industry to make a living,” she said.
“The reality is that Japan has become a country where foreign men can get women and have sex with them,” the activist added.
The issue has become a serious problem, Kazunori Yamanoi, the country’s main opposition leader, told The Japan Times. “This is no longer an internal issue. It is a very serious problem in terms of the way Japanese women are viewed around the world.”
Tokyo, once known as one of the most developed and livable cities in the world, is now facing a new kind of challenge.
