Especially in the post-COVID-19 era, economic problems and increasing poverty have forced many women to work as sex workers. “The reality is that Japan has become a country where foreign men can get women and have sex with them,” the activist added.

The issue has become a serious problem, Kazunori Yamanoi, the country’s main opposition leader, told The Japan Times. “This is no longer an internal issue. It is a very serious problem in terms of the way Japanese women are viewed around the world.”

Tokyo, once known as one of the most developed and livable cities in the world, is now facing a new kind of challenge.
