Taiwan's Meteorological Administration said the earthquake that struck Hualien County also shook the capital, Taipei. This earthquake originated at a depth of 17 km from the surface. Located near the intersection of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is extremely earthquake prone. Which is why some earthquakes of this magnitude can be deadly there.
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Hualien County on the east coast of Taiwan. The capital city of Taipei was also shaken by this earthquake. However, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Saturday's earthquake.
This information was given in a report by the British news agency Reuters citing Taiwan's Meteorological Administration. It said the moderate earthquake shook the sparsely populated Hualien County. No damage was immediately reported in the area.
Earlier, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit Taiwan's east coast in April last year. The largest earthquake in the last 25 years killed more than 900 people in the autonomous island. Thousands of aftershocks were felt after this earthquake.
Earlier, in 2016, a powerful earthquake in southern Taiwan killed hundreds of people. Before that, in 1999, more than 2,000 people died in an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on this island.
