Due to heavy rains, the water levels in the Maini and Chengi rivers have increased and the hills have flooded Merung and Kabakhali Unions of the district and 30 villages of the district headquarters. Road communication between Longdu and Sajek tourist centers is closed due to flooding. 370 tourists are trapped in it.
Confirming the matter on Saturday (August 3) morning, Rahul Chakma John, Organizing Secretary of Sajek Resort Cottage Owners Association, said that due to continuous rains in the last few days, water has risen on Baghaihat and Machalonge roads due to hill slopes coming down from upstream. As a result, traffic between Khagrachari and Sajek is closed. So this morning Skort did not leave and no car arrived from Khagrachari either. About 350 tourists who entered Sajek yesterday are currently staying in Sajek.
Saikat Chakma, lineman of Sajek-Khagrachari counter, said that no vehicle left from Khagrachari for Sajek, no vehicle left from Sajek as various parts of Khagrachari were submerged in flood water. However, the rain has stopped since this morning. Hopefully water will recede from the road and traffic will be normal by afternoon.
Indrajit Chakma, owner of Sajek Hillview Resort, said that tourists are currently spending time in Sajek. No problem. Tourists may leave in the afternoon when the water recedes.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akhter confirmed the information about the tourist getting stuck. He said that measures have been taken to ensure that the tourists stay well.
Due to the sinking of the road in the head quarter area of the Dighinala-Longdu road due to the landslide, the road communication with Longdu in Rangamati has been stopped. Merung market has also sunk.
Mahmuda Begum Lucky, Chairman of Merung Union Parishad, said that the water level of Maini river started rising from Friday afternoon. Roads are sinking. In this, the road communication between Longdu and Khagrachari is closed due to the sinking of the road in the Merung headquarters area. The people of this union have been affected by three floods this year.
Chairman of Dighinala Upazila Parishad Dharmajyoti Chakma said that 25 villages were flooded in Merung Union and Kabakhali Union of Dighinala in Khagrachari due to hill slopes. Due to continuous rains, the water level of Maini river has increased and caused floods.
