State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Mr. Junaid Ahmed Palak said that if the Facebook authorities behave responsibly and follow the laws of the country, their platform will be open in the country.
Facebook and TikTok cannot be used even after broadband internet connection is restored. But the state minister himself is active on these platforms. However, he also explained it.
Protests and violence centered around the quota reform movement in government jobs. The government imposed a curfew from midnight on July 19, which is still in force with occasional relaxations. The country's mobile internet services were shut down as the 4G network was shut down from midnight on July 17 before the curfew. The next day on July 18, the broadband internet connection was also stopped from 9:30 PM. The entire country was without internet.
After being without internet for five days, internet connection was given to some institutions on a limited basis on July 23 night. The next day, on July 24, broadband internet was launched across the country; However, internet service is still not as normal as it used to be. Apart from this, mobile internet is still closed.
Even though the broadband connection is on, Metar platforms Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp are down. Apart from this, TikTok is also closed. The Minister of State told reporters on July 23, "I am still not sure how much we can actually allow for social media."
Soon after the launch of broadband internet on July 23, the state minister started posting from his verified Facebook page. He is constantly posting information about his various activities on his Facebook. Apart from this, he is also doing live broadcasting of various events. He is also active on Instagram. Apart from this, he is also posting from his verified TikTok account.
There is criticism among the citizens that Facebook is closed for common people and the state minister is using it himself. When asked about the matter, Junaid Ahmed told Prothom Alo last Saturday night that he is active on social media to inform people of correct information to prevent rumours. He also said that the important institutions of the government including him can also remain active in this way.
When asked whether it would be helpful to prevent rumors if mainstream media could use platforms like Facebook that are closed, the state minister said that they are thinking about it.
When asked when the social media will be launched for everyone in Bangladesh, Junaid Ahmed said, only Facebook and TikTok can tell. A letter has been given regarding whether they will follow the constitution and laws of Bangladesh and whether they will follow their own guidelines properly or not. If they come and give an explanation, then the government will come to a decision about opening.
