Various areas of Kurigram have been devastated by the fierce storm of Kalbaishakhi. On Saturday (April 26), a sudden strong gust of wind and a storm caused extensive damage in various upazilas of the district at around 10:30 pm. Numerous trees and electricity poles were blown down; acres after acres of paddy fields were damaged.
According to local sources, many houses, trees, electricity poles and crops were damaged due to this sudden gust of wind. Although the exact extent of the damage was not immediately known, it is believed to be very high. Electricity supply to various areas of the district was completely cut off due to the tearing of electricity poles and wires in the storm. As a result, thousands of people had to spend the night in complete darkness.
Meanwhile, the storm broke the glass of the 6th floor window of Kurigram General Hospital, spreading panic among patients and relatives. Many patients and their relatives fled the wards for safety. Hospital authorities said the situation was quickly brought under control and there were no major casualties.
Shamsul Alam (60), a farmer from Panchgachhi Union in Kurigram Sadar Upazila, said,
"We have suffered a lot of damage here due to the Kalbaisakhi storm. The paddy in the field has been destroyed by the storm. The entire area is in darkness due to lack of electricity."
On the other hand, Jatrapur Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Abdul Gafur said,
"My union suffered extensive damage due to the sudden storm on Saturday night. It has not been possible to assess the exact extent of the damage yet. The local administration is assessing the damage."
