Abu Said Sikder, the long-time president and former chairman of Pinjuri Union Awami League in Kotalipara Upazila of Gopalganj, has broken the boat sculpture he built himself after announcing his departure from Awami League. He had been serving as the president of the union Awami League for almost 30 years.

On Sunday (April 27) morning, the beautiful boat sculpture installed on the pond in front of Abu Said Sikder's house in Kakdanga village of Pinjuri Union was broken. He himself was present there at the time and gave instructions to break the sculpture.

According to local sources, a few years ago, Abu Said Sikder built a boat-shaped sculpture on the pond in front of his house on his own initiative and at his own expense. That boat was a symbol of his political beliefs and loyalty to Awami League. However, he himself decided to break it due to a recent change in political ideology.

The incident has created a stir in the entire Kotalipara Upazila. There has been a storm of anger and criticism among local Awami League leaders and activists.

Pinjuri Union Awami League leader Kazi Mukta said,

"Abu Said Sikder was the president of Pinjuri Union Awami League for 30 years. Due to the influence of his uncle, the late former State Minister for Religion Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, he became the chairman of the boat symbol. After that, while he was the chairman, he committed massive corruption and embezzled crores of taka. Now, during the crisis of the Awami League, he is leaving the party — we strongly protest his actions."

In this regard, Abu Said Sikder told reporters,

"Whoever I join, he has become corrupt and fled. He has abandoned his ideals and fled. I will no longer be in that party. That is why I have also broken the boat sculpture that I built with my own hands."

He further clarified,

“I have decided not to have any further relations with the Awami League. That is why I have also removed the symbolic sculpture of the boat.”

The incident has received mixed reactions in the local political arena. Many see the matter as a manifestation of the deviation of political leaders. Some say that Abu Said Sikder committed such an incident out of personal anger.

No official comment has been received from the local administration on this matter yet. However, the incident is also being widely discussed on social media.
