District Awami League Joint General Secretary Fazle Noor Tanu (61) and Ulipur Upazila Awami League President Ahsan Habib Rana (62) have been arrested by the police in the Ashiq murder case in Kurigram.
On Sunday (October 27) at 10 pm, they were arrested in a joint operation by Sadar Thana Police and Police Intelligence Branch (DB) from the area adjacent to Zilla Parishad Market in Kurigram city.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Nazmul Alam confirmed the arrest.
The arrested Fazle Noor is a resident of Sabujpara village of ward number 3 of Tanu municipality area. He is a trader of electronic products. Ahsan Habib Rana is also a resident of Sabujpara village. He is the President of Ulipur Upazila Awami League. They have been arrested in the case of the murder of Ashiq, a student of Kurigram in the anti-discrimination student movement, police said.
According to the statement of the case, the protestors clashed with the leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations in the Shapla Chatwar area of the city on August 4 in the anti-discrimination student movement. Ashikur Rahman, a student, got hit on the head and was seriously injured. Later he died in a hospital in Dhaka while undergoing treatment. In this incident, on October 10, a student named Ruhul Amin became the plaintiff and named 104 people and filed a case against 500 to 600 unknown people in Kurigram Sadar Police Station. However, the arrested Fazle Noor Tanu and Ahsan Habib Rana are not named accused in this case.
According to the police, the arrested two Awami League leaders are accused in the preliminary investigation in the case. They have been arrested in a murder case.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station Nazmul Alam said, Tanu and Rana have been arrested in the case of student Ashiq's murder. They will be produced in court on Monday.
