Incessant rains and landslides from upstream have worsened the flood situation in Sherpur. The water of various rivers of the district has increased. New areas are being flooded. The floods that started on Friday (October 4) have so far claimed 7 lives. Many are missing.
Besides, the people concerned are afraid of extensive loss of agriculture and crops. According to the Agriculture Office, at least 30,000 hectares of aman and 1,000 hectares of vegetable crops have been destroyed in the district. At least 70 thousand farmers have been affected. The amount of loss is more than 11 crore rupees initially.
Due to the continued downpour, the waters of Maharshi, Someshwari, Chellakhali, Bhogai and Mirgi rivers of Sherpur are flowing above the danger level.
District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Nakibuzzaman Khan told More News that 177 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Nalitabari last night as well. Earlier, 260 millimeters of rain fell on Thursday. Several lakh people in Srivardi, Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas of the district are trapped in water. Voluntary organizations including local administration, BGB and army members are working to rescue people trapped in water.
Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman told More News that the water of several rivers in the district is flowing above the danger limit. District administration and upazila administration are on alert. We are working to rescue the victims and deliver dry food. At the same time, we are getting news of flooding in new areas.
