In this situation, the only means of crossing is the raft of two banana trees. Thousands of people of Jessore's Sharsha Upazila are suffering day after day as there is no way to get the water out.
Hundreds of thousands of people in the area have suffered due to the flooding of the lower areas of Jessore's Sharsha due to continuous heavy rains for several days. In the meantime, due to the unfinished work of the under-construction bridge over the Mahishakura and Makhlar canals on the Baganchra Jamtla-Balunda road, there has been a steep blow to the dead. As the people of this area along with their houses and crop lands are trapped in water, the only means of crossing this part of the canal for the people using this road is the raft of two banana trees.
Motorcycles, vans, bicycles and other small vehicles plying on this busy road, students, children, men and women and people of various professions are crossing with great difficulty on the banana trees. The residents demanded completion of the under-construction bridge with an alternative system to cross this part of the canal.
Locals said that the Baganchra Jamtala-Balunda road is the busiest, so thousands of people travel through this road every day. Besides, traders come to Sharsha, Baganchra and Navarn to buy various goods. Also, students of the area travel on this road. Due to the problems caused, people on both sides of the bridge including local residents are crossing the banana tree rafts at great risk. Many times they have to cut the ropes to cross because there are no rafts. They strongly demanded that the work of the under-construction bridge here be completed soon, along with an alternative system of transportation.
Abdullah of Mahishakura village said, if necessary, we have to travel through this road day and night. On the one hand, the speed of construction of the bridge is slow. On the other hand, we have to cross by riding rafts on the accumulated water due to heavy rains. If there is no raft, I can swim. There is no one to see our suffering.
Bappi, a student, said, "I took a risk and crossed the water with a raft." Books and notebooks get wet if they fall from the raft. No more going to school. We want freedom from this suffering.
Sharsha Upazila Engineer Sanaul Haque said that the area has sunk due to heavy and heavy rains, which is causing problems for people. Discussions have been held with the contractor. We will arrange for movement through water drainage within a week. He said that the bridge will be completed between November and December.
